The morning of boarding QM2 was painful, nothing to do with the hotel. The Lodge in Red Hook was perfectly nice. A friendly hotel with lovely rooms and large beds. Breakfast was average, coffee was hot and the service bumped the experience up a notch.
It wasn't the short Uber ride to the terminal. Nor was it the embarkation process into QM2.
The emerging issue was my escalating back problems. After a cocktail of various strong drugs, things were not improving, in fact they were getting considerably worse. This was borne out by having to literally crawl out of bed at around 2am this morning in excruciating pain. This had been growing throughout the day with my back going into spasm and cramping whilst walking around Brooklyn. The 2am experience was replicated at 8am where upon finding myself on the floor, I found myself wondering if I was actually going to be able to extract myself from that position or would it be a bunch of medics and a wheelchair facilitating that ambition!!
Emily had been watching this progression with concern and I eventually relented and agreed that I was going to have to see the on board doctor. At just after 10 this morning, I had my appointment and write this from bed having started a short course of diazepam and paracetamol to try and deal with the spasms. All being well this will work and hopefully will improve my mobility over the coming days.
Not the start I would have chosen but on the flipside I am very glad that this manifested whilst on board where I can be seen as quickly as I was. Flying in this state wouldn't have been possible. It's going to be a couple of days bed rest whilst the meds do their trick and then hopefully this world voyage can begin in earnest.
I've also noted that the blog appears to have edited itself with some sections inexplicably rearranging themselves. Not dissimilar to my spine!!!
