Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Queen Mary 2 will be my mode of transport as I circumnavigate the globe!
As Cunards flagship, QM2 is the world's only remaining purpose built ocean liner. When I first heard people making the distinction between cruise ship and ocean liner I assumed this was in an effort to distance themselves from the fact they were going cruising. I've since learnt that the distinction is a very real thing. QM2's design and overarching purpose is very different to that of the cruise ships. She's designed for the very purpose of navigating the North Atlantic Ocean in a timely, reliable manner. Her construction allows her to sail in seas where other passenger ships simply cannot. Hence the regular Transatlantic service that she provides.
However, as of one week ago, she began her final Transatlantic Crossing for a few months and will arrive into Brooklyn on the 19th January where I shall be waiting having flown into New York. From Brooklyn, she'll sail the world and I'll be on board until she returns to her berth in Southampton on the 30th April before resuming her Transatlantic crossings.
You can see her ports of call on the destination page of this site.
She's a stunning ship and the more I learn about her design and her heritage, the more I realise how lucky I am to work on board. It's questionable if there will ever be another purpose built ocean liner, so I kind of see this as my Concorde moment.
